Getting Access

Wireless Connections

The University's wireless network is designed for students, faculty, and staff who are mobile computer users. Mobile users may have wireless-enabled laptop computers, PDAs, or similar devices. It gives mobile users a way to connect to many of the same computing resources available to them from a campus office or student residence hall. There are wireless "hot spots" in and around many campus buildings. It also includes a public-private wireless service that provides access for university account holders and commercial wireless network access for campus visitors.

Using the Wireless Networks at HU

Hampton University's wireless infrastructure is provided and designed to augment the existing wired networks. Users should utilize the wired networks in order to gain faster data rates reliability and higher levels of security. The University's wireless networks are known as Wireless Pirate 1 and Wireless Pirate 2. Please refer to the HAMPTON UNIVERSITY APPROPRIATE USE OF TECHNOLOGY POLICY.

The Center for Information Technology will turn off any access port to the network with an AP that is not approved. Please contact the ATM for approval of wireless access points.

There are several key actions, which we must take immediately to protect the University and all the users of HU's network:

  1. All current wireless access points must be approved by and registered with the ATM.
  2. No wireless users should access the University's business administrative systems, BANNER, Enterprise Accounting System, etc, without written authorization.
  3. The ATM will turn off any access port to the network that puts the University's systems and users at risk. If you or your department foresees wireless in your future, or have a current wireless access point you need to register, please contact the ATM help desk for wireless access point approval procedures.

Students will be able to access the Internet, email, Blackboard, Pirate Power Online, CampusEAI, and the HamptonYou! portal using a web browser.

Any department or individual desiring access to university resources through wireless must apply for Virtual Private Network (VPN) access through the ATM.

Getting Connected
  1. When wireless networks are available Windows XP recognizes wireless availability. Double click the computer icon on the task bar near the clock. When completed Go to Step 3.
  2. If an Icon does not appear, click on Start, then Connect to, and then select Show all connections. Right-click on the Wireless Network Connection and select Enable. Double-click the Wireless Network Connection.
  3. Choose either of the wireless connections identified (Wireless Pirate 1 in and around administrative buildings or Wireless Pirate 2 when in and around residence halls) by clicking the desired name and selecting connect.
  4. Your Wireless network connection will show connected.
  5. Enter your User Name and Password into the Registered User box.

    Users from a different domain (Library, CVB, etc.) must enter the domain name followed by firstname.lastname in the username box as shown.

  6. You will see User Authenticated and redirect information.

    You must have an existing account on the Hampton University INFOTECH domain.

  7. "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" must be selected in order to use the Windows XP Wireless Network Connection as seen below.
